Mr. Ponce was looking for a modern, slab couch. His wish was for a couch that “appeared to be floating.”
Being a couch, I knew that it would be a tough task to mask the supports. I went to the sketchbook and immediately was drawn towards several ideas that focused all of the weight into two large feet that abstractly resembled those of kangaroos. Doing this would create an enormous amount of moment, making the floating slab all the more difficult.
The final product ended up with a short middle foot due to the deflection in the frame. The final product is 8 feet long, with a sitting surface of over 6 feet.
